A quick note about Bong Sao

When throwing a bong sao make sure that your elbow is higher than your wrist. The purpose for this is two fold; one preventing hooks being thrown from easily accessing their target and two creating a natural bow that will force incoming assaults to veer away from their intended target.

Kicking Drill

First drill - Inverted Hook Kick

Is thrown to the outside. Is similar to an oblique kick that misses. Like all kicks supporting leg determines range. This kick is usually thrown from the front leg. It is very important for this kick to be thrown straight in and straight out.
Do not roll your foot.
Do not try to put large amounts of power behind this kick.
It is very much a one inch kick.

Second drill - Fuete Kick

Is thrown to the inside. Like above it is thrown with front leg. Also straight in and out. Also one inch kick.

Third drill - Combine above two kicks

Start off throwing inside hook kick then go into fuete without putting leg down inbetween kicks.
Then try throwing fuete first followed by inside hook.

As always remember to work both leads and different heights.

Jab catch Cross shoulder roll Triplets

All combinations are done in a pattern of three between two partners. Partner 1 goes once partner two goes once partner one goes a second time, then move around and reverse so that partner two goes twice.

First Drill
Jab Catch

Partner one Jabs at partner two's chin. P2 lifts rear leg and falls back when jab contacts their glove. Then P2 returns jab and P1 retreats. P1 completes triplet with final jab. Move around. P2 initiates next triplet.

For Jab step in with both feet and turn your toes perpendicular to oppenent. Retreat by stepping out with both feet returning to square position with oppenent.

Second Drill
Cross Shoulder Roll

P1 throws cross at P2's chin. P2 rolls hips drops wrist replacing where chin was with shoulder. The arm that is doing the roll should not expose the back, nor should the elbow rise. The motion is for all intense purposes a bong sau movement. By rolling hips leg is in position to throw cut kick. Again like previous drill do in a triplet with alternating feeder at beginning.

  • Right shin kick to inside followed by left bong tek driving forward to thigh, top of hip or gut
  • Right bong tek followed by outside left shin kick
  • Right fuete followed by left bong tek
